Building tools that
work together

A web designer making a small suite of focused tools for the browser and the Mac, shipping them one at a time.

Why we built Studio Grid

Studio Grid is an independent studio building a connected system of design tools: native Mac apps and browser extensions that work together instead of scattering across a dozen tabs and menu bars.

It started with a simple frustration. The work between having an idea and shipping it was slower and more fragmented than it should be, whether that meant grabbing an exact colour off the screen, checking contrast, converting a file, or keeping an eye on what your Mac is doing.

So we built our own tools, then kept building them into a system that shares a language and gets more capable the more of it you use. We ship in the open, listen, and push it forward with every release.

If something here saves you an hour, that’s only the start, because we’re building the studio you’ll run your work from.

A focused suite,
not a Swiss Army knife.

Each one does a single job properly and leaves out the extras you'd never use, because they're built for working designers.

How we build

How we build every Studio app

Anyone can say they care about the details. Everything below is something you can check for yourself, on your own Mac or on this site.

  • We build slowly and use each app every day

    • Every Studio app is used daily for weeks before anyone else sees it. Studio Gauge took a month, the Studio Colour extension four months, Darkroom a year.
    • Features arrive when they work properly. The charge limit in Gauge waited until macOS 27 could hold it.
    • We would rather ship one app that lasts than five that stop working next year.
  • Every release is signed and notarized

    • Each Mac build is signed with our Apple Developer ID and sent to Apple for notarization before it goes out, so macOS opens it without the warning unsigned apps get.
    • Every extension goes through the Chrome Web Store review with the smallest set of permissions it can work with.
    • You can check ours yourself: right-click an app, choose Get Info, and look for the developer name.
  • Updates come from our own feed, signed

    • Our Mac apps check studiogrid.io once a day and show you what changed before anything installs.
    • Each update carries a signature the app verifies first, so nobody else can hand you one.
    • Every release is dated in the public changelog.
  • Your work stays on your Mac

    • Usage, notes, colours and images are read on your Mac and kept there. Studio Grid never receives them.
    • Our apps go online for your own accounts, your licence key and the update check, and nothing else.
    • There is no account to create, no profile and no analytics inside the apps.
  • Everything is written down

    • A Read Me ships with every Mac app, covering setup, each feature, privacy and how to uninstall.
    • Release notes are in plain English, never “bug fixes and improvements”.
    • Prices, trials and what each app does are on the page before you buy.
  • We answer our own support

    • Support email goes to the person who wrote the app.
    • Licences, receipts and refunds run through Lemon Squeezy, so they work the way you expect.
    • One licence covers one Mac, and you can move it yourself when you change machines.
